Latvia & Lithuania

Latvia had the same abortion legislation as the Soviet Union and post-independence has maintained the status quo. Abortions are available on request up to the 28th week.

A 1995 Fertility and Family Survey found 3 women out of 10 had already had at least one induced abortion before the age of 25.

In 2000, alarmed by the declining birth rate, the government has established several programmes to encourage more children.

Lithuania has the same history as Latvia, with abortions currently available on request up to and through the 28th week.
